Look what I have had! Bedok "Chwee Kueh" 水粿

"Chwee kueh" 水粿, is a simple yet delightful dish for many locals, especially as breakfast. The "chwee kueh" itself is made from rice flour and water are mixed into a slightly viscous mixture. They are then placed in small saucers and steamed. The result is a almost opaque white 'wobbly' rice cake. The rice cakes are topped with diced preserved salted radish and served with chilli sauce.
This dish is relatively simple to make and the ingredients are very cheap. Hence, "chwee kueh" is actually a very affordable dish. However, to make a good "chwee kueh" that stands out among the rest and later franchise it, like what Bedok "Chwee Kueh" did, something must be special! Bedok "Chwee Kueh" has long attracted foodies from around Singapore to visit the Bedok hawker centre beside the bus interchange, for something that is so cheap and available anywhere. Bedok "Chwee Kueh" has definitely something that draws the crowd and enable it to franchise it, such as one at 453A Chong Boon Market & Cooked Food Centre, in my residential vicinity. The franchise stall is located on the same side of the food centre (facing Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10) as the franchised Chong Pang Curry Chicken Noodle.

"Chwee Kueh" (水粿)
Bedok "Chwee Kueh"
S$1.50 for 6pcs
At 25cents each piece, they only sell in 4s, 6s and 8s. There is additional charge for separation of ingredients (applicable only to 8pcs and above) for take-aways. However, regular take-away is the same price as having here. In order for the "chwee kueh" to be good, the "kueh" must be 'wobbly' and soft enough. But most importantly, the chilli and the diced "chye poh" (preserved salted radish). In Bedok "chwee kueh" version, the chilli paste is very spicy and tasty and "chye poh" incredibly fragrant both scent and taste! With careful examination, the "chye poh" has got black sesame, white sesame and finely diced garlic blended with the preserved salted radish, cooked in vegetable oil.

Verdict
Whichever franchise outlet of Bedok "Chwee Kueh" you visit, despite possibly micro-variations, you will definitely not be disappointed by the good "chwee kueh" that keeps you craving for more! The health conscious will have to watch the amount they eat though, since the 'chye poh' and chilli paste are actually quite oily but incredibly scrumptious! I would usually whallop everything till the last piece of 'chye poh'! Furthermore , this cheap and simple dish can go as a side with main meals as well. Hence, if you come across any franchises of Bedok "Chwee Kueh", make sure you have at least 4pcs!
