EATZ: Dim Sum at 揾到食

揾到食
126 Sims Avenue
near to Geylang Lorong 17

Admist the the bustling nightlife in the unofficial red-light district of Singapore, is where many good food can be found. Both Sims Avenue and Geylang Road are lined with food stalls competiting with each other to become an icon of Geylang, while street walkers and men prowl the 'Lorongs' (streets) waiting for a trade of vice to take place. Apart from the popular beef horfun and monopolized Eminent frog's legs porridge, there also other popular eateries such as the Rochor beancurd, whom thrive on the absence of the ever popular 豆浆油条(soybean milk and fried dough sticks) eatery; and there is 揾到食 ("Wen Dao Shi" in Pinyin) that serves a wide variety of tasty 点心 (Dim Sum).

皮蛋粥 (Century egg congee) & softshell crab
The century egg congee comes with huge chunks of centry egg slices sitting on a thick tasty congee, sprinkled with minced pork bits and spring onion. Crispy softshell crab thought without much meat, but is crispy enough to savour the whole tasty crab itself.
菜头粿 (Chinese carrot cake) and 白菜卷 (Chinese cabbage roll)
Mushy Chinese-stye carrot cake deep-fried in a simple egg batter. A healthier choice is the Chinese cabbage roll with pork stuffing.
腐皮卷 (Beancurd roll)
A personal favourite is the deep fried beancurd roll. The crispy beancurd skin wraps succulent shrimp meat stuffing.
纸菜卷 (Seaweed roll)
Similar to the beancurd roll, except that a thinner beancurd skin was used to cover a layer of nori (seaweed) and fish paste. The seaweed roll is also deep fried till crispy.
叉燒包 (barbequed pork buns)
Handmade char siu buns with tasty and sweet char siu (barbequed pork).

Verdict
If you haven't been to 揾到食 to try their dim sum, you ought to do that soon. This place is not spankingly spick-and-span like other popular dim sum restaurants such as "Red Star" or "Swee Choon", but they serve a comprehensive range of dim sum, from the commonly popular "蝦餃" (har kow, prawn dumpling) and "烧卖" (siu mai, pork dumpling) to a delightfully exotic "炸大肠" (deep fried pig's large intestines) and even a local favourite chilli crab. There is definitely something to entice your taste buds. Though they recently increased their prices which I felt is rather steep, yet I have to battle between good food and price. I will not mind going to 揾到食 for a few dim sum snacks every now and then drop by the durian stalls opposite for some cheap and good durians!
