EATZ: Honjin Kushiyaki Restaurant

Honjin Kushiyaki Restaurant
140 Robinson Road
Chow House #2-00
Tel: 6220 9989
Operating Hours: 11am -3pm, 6pm-11pm
Admist the tall commercial buildings, an eye-catching Japanese-themed facade stands out from the dull flat surfaces of Chow House. Honjin Kushiyaki Restaurant is a restaurant by Sun Restaurant Group which also operates the Hojin Japanese Restaurant and the famous 7th Storey Steamboat at Rochor Road). To clear up some misunderstanding, I have visited Honjin Kushiyaki Restaurant which is joined to Honjin Japanese Restaurant at the same compound at Chow House. Honjin Japanese Restaurant occupies the first level which is the revolving sushi bar counter and accessible by the main door, while Honjin Kushiyaki Restaurant occupies the second level which is the regular sushi bar counter and dining area accessible from inside the first level or by another door above a short flight of stairs to the right of the main store front. Diners going for buffet will dine at level 1, while those dining a-la-carte will dine at level 2. The interior decor is very ethnic Japanese style with staff dressed in traditional outfits, making this a rather authentic Japanese dining experience!
The Hotate 1-for-1 Buffet cost S$52++ for 2 adults, which is a damn good deal!

Salmon Sashimi
S$20
Five thick slabs of salmon sashimi decorated and served with some pickled ginger slices and wasabi.

Sukiyaki
すき焼き
S$22
Beef slices, seared firm tofu, Chinese cabbage, shungiku (春菊) (Garland Chrysanthemum leaves or tang-oh, 茼蒿), onions, carrots, jelly-noodles, shiitake and enokitake mushrooms stewed in a tasty, sweet broth made from soy sauce, sugar and mirin (味醂, a rice wine condiment).

Tonkatsu Set
S$16++
This Tonkatsu set includes: a tender, juicy slab of deep fried pork cutlet with sweet-and-sour sauce, a bowl of preserved vegetables with shiitake & brinjal & a pair of balls of mashed ? roots, chawanmushi, a ? fish belly in sauce, rice, miso soup and cut fruits. The fish belly side is really odd tasting, but the heavy tangy sauce masks the odd taste. According to the staff, it is an expensive fish belly and is seldom available.

Gindara Teriyaki Set
S$20++
This Gindara Teriyaki set includes: a grilled cod fish (gindara) in teriyaki sauce, salad, kimchi, ? fish belly, cut fruits, chawanmushi, rice and miso soup.

Verdict
I dined at the second level which is Honjin Kushiyaki Restaurant. The dining area is decorated with Japanese ornaments and furnitures. Interestingly, the ceiling is decorated with paper egg trays and there is one or two egg sticking on the tray. The dining experience is very good especially with their friendly staff dressed in traditional outfits. The price is reasonable for such an authentic-looking Japanese restaurant. The food is very good as well. I particularly love the "Gindara Teriyaki set" where cod fish is grilled just right, preserving the taste and juices of the meat and goes with perfectly well with a slight touch of teriyaki sauce. When I tabulating my expected bill, I realised that the price that I was going to pay, could pay for the Hotate 1-for-1 Buffet (S$52++ for two adults) which I feel is a damn good deal! Just check out the buffet menu and you will be SOLD!. My next visit will definitely be for the 1-for-1 buffet! Since I managed to get a voucher during this visit, I can redeem it in my next visit by spending at least S$100 , which is 4 persons to go on the buffet.
A tip: If you intend to visit Honjin, you should pick weekends or after office-hours when the CBD is less crowded. It makes the whole experience a casual and enjoyable one. I personally love to visit the CBD after hours and weekends, do not ask me why!
I really can't wait for my next visit to come any sooner!
